"Awakening" the Psoas Series- Part 3

4 Part Series of “Awakening” the Psoas- Part 3

How could Fear inhibit the Psoas?

Since the psoas is closely linked to our “fight or flight” mechanism, fear can be over-represented in those with a constricted psoas. It’s not wonder that fear is correlated to this region of the body, this is where the 1st Chakra “the Root” is housed, which has to do with our sense of feeling Safe, Centered, Grounded.

It is an emotion that manifests itself in the most unusual ways and can “lock” iutself into the body resulting in both physical and emotional tension. By restoring balance to the your psoas muscles, you are likely to release this pent up tension, which can have a profound effect on releasing deceptive fearfulness about life, and thus improve both your physical and mental wellbeing. You will feel a greater sense of inner peace, along with fewer muscle aches and strains.

How To: *3rd Pose of “Awakening” the psoas Parivrtta Parsvakonasana/Revolved Side Angle Pose:

Revolving poses complete the “walk” around the muscle so that it is fully awakened. At this point in thew series, the psoas is usually once more under conscious control and can be contracted at will.

Parivrtta Parsvakonasana turns the pelvis and trunk in opposite directions. This action creates a stretch of the core muscles surrounding the spine. Stabilize this pose by activating the front leg psoas and back leg gluteus maximus (butt). The result is a “wringing” effect across the pelvis. Pushing off with the back foot and resisting with the front foot.

Muscles along the outside of the front hip and those beside the large buttock muscle cooperate to press the knee against the elbow, aiding in the turn of the pose.

*Hold for 20-30 seconds while belly breathing.

Let me know how this pose goes for you.

I would also love for you to come check out a class sometime! Our classes are a beautiful balance of fun and peace.

**Stay tuned for next week, as we continue this Series with the correlation between the Psoas and the Energetic Body.
