But is it True?

Have you ever found yourself up in the dwellings of your mind thinking about all the things?

Secondly, when you find yourself up there, have you found that you do a great job at creating a “what you think to be true story line or “reality”?

I am pretty sure you are shaking your head right now, saying, “Theresa, come on, me? Dissecting all the different life situations, playing out all the different scenarios of what I think is going on? Phefffff, never would I ever!”

I say to that, Liar Liar pants on fire! Ha!

We are all guilty of this at some point in our lives. We are human. Give yourself some grace and have yourself a little giggle imagining your pants literally being “on fire” right now. Ha ha!

In these times of so much uncertainty I want to remind you, there can be peace, there can be a sense of control, there can be some truth.

We are keeping it simple today with a question that I love from Byron Katie’s “The Work” : Is it true?

As Katie talks about in her book Loving What Is, “The Work always brings us back to who we really are. Each belief investigated to the point of understanding allows the next belief to surface. You undo that one. Then you undo the next and the next. At some point, you may notice that you’re meeting every thought, feeling, person, and situation as a friend. Until eventually you are looking for a problem. Until, you notice that you haven’t had one in years.” This is doing what Katie coins “The Work”, inquiring within ourselves for the truth, which if you haven’t found out yet, is within You, not outside of you.

So how does this work?

We start by picking one thing that is taking up precious space and energy in the brain.

I’ll use the example: I am not doing enough. I should be doing more house work, I should be more active, I should get up early to get everything done, but I’m tired.

Now I ask myself: But is this statement true that I am not good enough? What is the proof? I start to write down and/or think, well who actually makes the “good enough” barometer? Oh yeah, I do. Did I accomplish everything I wanted to today? Maybe not what others thought I NEEDED to get done but for me today I feel accomplished. I’m tired and I know my body/mind needs to rest. The kids are fed, watered, clothed and safe. I am fed, watered, clothed and safe. Could that be enough? The answer is Yes. Especially, during these times. And what if with all this unknown and loss of control that we might be feeling, what if we could come to the truth.....In this moment: I am alive and breathing and by golly that is all I got right now and IT IS ENOUGH!

This Work does take some “work” to flip the switch in the mind but it can be done and it can be very helpful for when we are feeling anxious, fearful, stressed, loss of control and with trauma. What do we know to be in this moment? How can we get ourselves back to the present, the truth.

There are 3 more questions that can go with this exercise of “The Work” to turn things around in your mind to arrive at the truth of situations, people and yourself.

If you would like some assistance to go over this Work a little bit more, with just the one question and/or working with the other questions, I would be happy to help!

Head on over to the website and schedule a Coaching Session.

Wouldn’t you love to be able to feel a sense of certainty during these uncertain times? How about a little sense of peace? It’s helped me for sure.
